We believe every Arkansan should have access to high quality and affordable healthcare.

The Urban League of the State of Arkansas is committed to improving the health and quality of life of all Arkansans. Through our Healthcare Outreach Program, we strive to ensure that every Arkansan understands the importance of good health and has access to affordable, high-quality healthcare solutions.

We recognize that health outcomes are not solely determined by medical care but are deeply influenced by social determinants of health – the conditions in which people are born, live, work, play, and worship. Our approach acknowledges that factors such as education, employment, housing, and neighborhood conditions play crucial roles in shaping health outcomes. For instance, individuals with limited education may struggle to understand health information or navigate complex healthcare systems, leading to poorer health choices and outcomes. Similarly, those facing unemployment or underemployment may lack health insurance or the financial means to seek timely medical care, potentially exacerbating health issues. The quality and safety of housing can significantly impact health, with substandard living conditions potentially leading to respiratory issues, injuries, and stress-related illnesses. Furthermore, neighborhood characteristics such as access to healthy food options, safe spaces for physical activity, and exposure to environmental pollutants can profoundly affect an individual’s health status.

Our Healthcare Outreach Program aims to address these interconnected factors by:

  1. Providing health education that is accessible and culturally appropriate.
  2. Offering job training and employment assistance to improve economic stability.
  3. Advocating for affordable housing initiatives and neighborhood improvement projects.
  4. Collaborating with local partners to increase access to nutritious food and safe recreational spaces.
  5. Connecting individuals with community resources that address various social needs.

By addressing non-medical drivers of health outcomes, we aim to create a more holistic approach to health improvement in Arkansas. We understand that enhancing access to healthcare is crucial, but creating environments and opportunities that promote health and wellbeing across all aspects of life is equally important. Through this comprehensive strategy, the Urban League of the State of Arkansas works towards a future where all Arkansans can achieve optimal health, regardless of their socioeconomic background or living conditions.
